There is a strong pet-owner emotional bond, pets provide company, security and affection, the presence of pets during holidays is an ongoing fascination since the Second World War. These days around two million pets go on annual holidays. Therefore, the tourism industry is in a continuous transformation to fulfill pet travelers needs.

Throughout the region flat beaches are perfect for walking, in some non touristic hideaways be accessible by land or sea, and the oft-mountains backdrop is majestic. Puerto Vallarta sits at the center of horseshoe shape Bahía de Banderas, the second largest bay in North America, exquisitely visible from cliff-side hotels and restaurants, the bay´s scalloped coast holds myriad coves and small bay perfect for shelling , sunning, swimming, and engaged in other pet friendly activities.

Mexico is one of the few countries that welcome travelers with pets, with no challenging processes or pet quarantine, Mexican regulation regarding pet entering in the country only requires to present a health certificate and immunization record, at the animal regulatory agency at the airport.

Regarding transportation, airlines must charge an extra fee, calculated on the pet weight and pets must be transported in a kennel.  With a deposit and an extra charge Mexican resorts and condominium complex, usually allows one pet per room, mostly small breeds. There are available special resort amenities such as disposal special beds, water containers, and in general an exclusive outdoors area is available at the facilities for pets.  

Marina Vallarta

The Green House Puerto Vallarta, is a more private pet friendly option in the neighborhood, is a 4 mexican villas complex, equipped with kitchenette private terraces, and a common pool surrounded with tropical gardens.  

Marina boardwalk is the perfect spot for jogging or walking the dog, surrounded by the ocean and yats, and there are plenty of pet friendly restaurants and coffee shops alternatives. Mr. Cream Pancakes and Waffles is an excellent choice for breakfast in an open space for the ocean breeze and a nice view of Marina´s boats; La Cevichería is a must for local seafood; Cervecería Chapultepec is also a good option for mexican food and a beer, and for some coffee and dessert, La Crepería de la Marina has delicious salad and sweet crepes.


Hotel Zone

Hotel Zone is located a few minutes from the airport, in its main avenue Francisco Medina Ascencio, you will find next to the beach many pet friendly beachfront options, restaurants, cafes and shopping malls and restaurants as well.  Puerto de Luna is a pet friendly hotel, with a large central pool surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens, for an extra charge, a maximum of two pets can stay in the room and enjoy amenities like a special bed, water dispenser and a doggy park inside the complex

Hotel Zone is loved by joggers, starting at the river walk, located between Plaza Península and continuing in a close and calm neighborhood called Fluvial; beaches at hotel zone are mostly interconnected, so they are perfect for exercise or a long walk too.

A few steps is La Isla Shopping Village, a fine open mall mexican chain, located also in Cancun, Acapulco, Mérida, with exclusive brands of jewelry, underwear and beach clothes, sandals, technology, find handcraft, and also starbucks and other options for a snack or meal.


A very interesting  outdoor option for lunch, dinner, some coffee or a drink is  Food Park PV, it is an open space, very convenient for social distancing and offers a variety of gastronomy from seafood, japanese, kebabs, mexican, stake, vegetarian, coal oven pizza, cocktails, and deserts.  


Zona Romantica

Romantic Zone are located in the heart of Puerto Vallarta is this traditional Mexican area, that combines Mexican classic architecture  with new and modern design, is a very fancy and eclectic neighborhood with many restaurants, bars, stores and art galleries.

The oldest farmer market is on weekends during the high season, at Lazaro Cárdenas Square, they have fresh baked products, artisanal food, handmade clothing, jewelry, and handcrafts.

Los Muertos Pier was the first wooden pier in Puerto Vallarta, built in qhr 1960`s for the film of The Night of the Iguana, nowadays has a concrete structure and became a departure point for boats going to southern coastal destinations like Mismaloya, Yelapa, Quimixto, Playa Caballo, Colomitos among other beautiful beaches between the jungle with beach restaurants for spending the day. This resembles a soaring sail that projects 320 feet into the ocean, plenty of seating, colorful lighting and pedestrian pathways is perfect for a pet oceanfront promenade.


With beautiful view of Banderas Bay and the Sierra Madre mountains offers accommodation options like beautiful beach front hotel boutiques like  Vallarta Shores,  modern complex like D’Terrace, and typical Mexican traditional design and gay friendly Casa Cúpula.  

Romantic zone is super pet friendly and cuisine is delicious, there are nice places such as Coco's kitchen cozy and nice place  for breakfast and lunch;  for lunch, dinner a drink a more alive place is Margarita Grill. For international cuisine and an european coffee Kaiser Maximiliano is a perfect option.



This is the best-known neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta, is famous for its cobblestone streets and typical white houses with red tile roofs, a nostalgic atmosphere that recalls times from the past. Main Square known as well as Plaza de Armas is a perfect spot for an ice cream. The city hall also has the Mexican typical architecture remains on one side and in the other the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with the ocean at the background.

Malecon begins in downtown and ends in romantic zone, is one of the most attractions of Banderas Bay, constructed in 1936, it has been renovated several times, closed to traffic and embellished with beautiful plants and colorful flowers. This promenade is a marvelous experience for some exercise or a pet walking with the pacifc ocean and the sound of the waves, as a back scenario, and appreciate the beautiful art pieces along the boardwalk, also there are plenty handcraft, silver jewelry, beach clothes like Zingara Beachwear store, sunglasses, and also traditional restaurants and bars with terraces like La Dolce Vitta for italian fine cuisine or margarita cocktail at the sunset.

Hacienda San Angel is nestled above the narrow cobblestone streets, offering marvelous ocean and city views. Mexican colonial architecture and turn of the century furniture, makes this 16 suites boutique hotel a charming experience with terraces, tropical gardens, trickling fountains, pool, restaurant and SPA.

Casa Kimberly, former Elizabeth Taylor house, connected to a bridge to Richard Burton house, became a 9 suites hotel boutique decorated with antiques, crystal chandeliers, hand painted tiles, patios with jacuzzi, pools, spa and a restaurant.

Bucerías y La Cruz de Huanacaxtle

Nearby are Bucerías and la Cruz de Huacanaxtle, small quiet places, for those who are looking for a peaceful, calm and intimate and natural environment to share with their pets. Enjoy this side of Riviera Nayarit with quiet and beautiful beaches, local fine restaurants, art galleries and flea markets.

Bucerías is a small town at Jalisco and Nayarit states border. Has a great golden long beach with oceanfront fresh local seafood restaurants. A few minutes from the beach there is Los Arroyos Verdes, an ecological complex, with villas built in a 30,000 meter botanical garden, the perfect spot for pets. Beautiful decorated villas surrounded by green tropical vegetation, special outdoor areas for pets and an amazing lounge at the pool area. Temazcal and other special events such as gastronomic and music festivals, are regularly organized by the owner  


The main square of the village invites to take a promenade with local people who go there during the afternoon for a pleasant afternoon, also is a must visit a beachfront restaurant like Mar y Sol for a pescado zarandeado, a regional specialty grilled fish with a traditional marinate.

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is a quiet fishing village, an ideal setting for a relaxing experience, at the heart of the town is Vallarta Gardens, a small boutique beach hotel with amazing gardens, private beach, outdoor pools, a restaurant and a private chef. Under the shadow of parota trees there is a snack bar to relax and enjoy a cocktail.

Just a few steps from La Marina is El Barracuda, a mexican seafood restaurant, traditional market seafood recipes, is a must.


Punta de Mita

The permissibility of animals in public and private spaces is a matter of discretion, with the exception of banks, supermarkets, hospitals, regarding public transportation and Uber or local taxi, pets must be in a kennel.

Regarding veterinary services, along the Pacific coast there are many specialized clinics, with high quality services available 24 hours. Pet care treatments, food, treats, and toys are easily found in supermarkets, premium foods are often sold by vets. To avoid pet diseases, it is important to use a flea and tick treatment, heat and humidity exposure makes the pet vulnerable to these matters, oral and ampoule treatment are available in mexican vets, usually the protection lasts for at least a month.

Is important to be aware that acts of animal cruelty; owners must remove their animal feces from public spaces and remain leashed, failure to do so is punishable by Mexican regulation.

Finally it must be considered that pets are sensitive to hot temperatures, so it must be considered adequate hydration, spaces for resting in a shadow in the daily schedule, which are always available for travelers and pets in every mentioned destination.
