Staying young by learning in Ajijic

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” —Henry Ford

Old couple learning

Even if we find our bodies slowing down, our minds don’t have to.

Ajijic, and the Lake Chapala area, are home to many over-50, English-speaking residents. Many are retired and don’t work, but want to keep learning and growing.

You’ll be inspired by the accomplished, friendly people you can meet in the community. They contribute to a lively atmosphere of cultural activities.

In Ajijic, there’s no reason to succumb to boredom, watching unenriching programs, or feeling stagnant.

The Lake Chapala Society is a great place to start. Take a yoga or dance class. Try your hand at hobbies like knitting and pottery. Join their active volunteer program and be connected.

Listen to speakers on a variety of topics, and join a discussion group. If you have interesting experiences or expertise to share, apply to become a speaker. Lead a class, or give a workshop.

Play Scrabble, help kids discover art, teach English, check out books and books-on-tape at one of the largest English-language library in all of Mexico, take in a concert or attend a fundraiser for a local cause.

Membership is just 1,000 pesos a year, about $50 US dollars. Many programs are free to non-members.

The lakeside area also boasts three English-language theaters that can entertain and inspire you, with live plays, concerts and other programs to challenge your mind.
