Why move to Ajijic

Ajijic

Top reasons lakeside residents say they’re glad they moved to Ajijic

There’s an interesting story to be told by each person who’s made the move to Ajijic, and the Lake Chapala region.

The population of residents from foreign countries tends to be older, and retired people. But young families have also discovered the area. Parents can work online, and their children can go to public schools, co-ops, or be home-schooled.

In Ajijic, you won’t find the hustle-and-bustle and nightlife of Puerto Vallarta and many beach towns. You will struggle if you try to find a place open for dinner after 9 pm.

But let’s look at the reasons folks give for moving here:

Lower cost of living than cities in the US and Canada, as well as popular Mexican tourist towns. This applies in real estate, rentals, restaurants, health care, and stores.

“Second best weather in the world.” People often chuckle at that well-circulated claim the area has been given. It’s true that it’s sunny and mild most of the year. June and July are hot. There’s a rainy season in mid-June to mid-October. And there’s just enough cool weather to wrap up in sweaters and scarves during December and January. “Best” and “perfect” weather is something everyone has a different opinion about, of course.

The biggest lake in Mexico. Lake Chapala provides serene sunsets and sunrises to the southern border of Ajijic. To the north, the city is nestled by picturesque green mountains—which look a little browner before the rainy season. Nature and trails for hiking are abundant, and seasonal blooming flowers pierce the senses with color. Lake-lovers enjoy boating, windsurfing, and other water sports.

Closeness to Guadalajara and its airport. Mexico’s second biggest city, Guadalajara, has Costcos and stores many foreign residents like to frequent. An IKEA recently opened in Guadalajara. Andares Shopping Mall boasts a full-size Victoria’s Secret with top-notch customer service. Buses leave lakeside towns hourly every day, and will take you to Guadalajara comfortably for 65 pesos (about $3.25 US dollars). A driver or taxi can be hired to take your group for $600 pesos and up.

Friendly people. The local Mexicans are warm and kind, and welcome everyone at their many public celebrations throughout the year. Many foreign residents form clubs around their hobbies, like pickle ball, yoga, gardening, and many more. It’s easy to find your niche volunteering, finding something new to learn, and getting involved in your favorite pastimes.
